Sustainability Roadmap
Our Commitment & Progress Made
Environmental Management

Maya Tangalle is accredited to the internationally recognised ISO 14001:2015 standard. The Manor has maintained its full responsibility towards the environment and ensure its continuous commitment to preserve and protect the environment for the benefit of future generations.

Water Conservation

Following the results of the property water consumption in 2021 we identified over 80 conservation opportunities, to date we have completed 85% of our rectification plans. The total water consumption in 2022 year only grew by 5%. Displaying a 57% reduction in water per visitation. We face the challenge of reducing our water consumption further as most plumbing fixtures are already “low flow” – over 90.7% of our plumbing fixtures are high efficiency (3- or 4-tick) under the Green Labelling Scheme. Through on property engagement projects we encourage our team members to reduce their water consumption in operations to help achieve our goals.
Furthermore, 100m3 of rainwater is collected per year and cascades into the pool. It is then filtered and recycled for use in the flush water toilet systems. 100m3 is equivalent to three years’ supply for a 4-room flat.

Sustainable Procurement

Since re-opening in 2022, Maya Tangalle continuously strives to achieve excellence in our procurement procedures with our pool of over 20+ suppliers. The Manor’s sustainable purchasing policy provides guidelines to our vendors, encouraging them to provide solutions, materials, and goods that are eco-friendly. Sourcing from sustainable food sources and procuring of earth friendly packaging materials are also recommendations included in our sustainable purchasing policy and are key elements of our environmental strategy. Our sustainable procurement policy is based on the ISO 20400:2017 Sustainable Procurement Guidelines. We currently procure 95% of products within Sri Lanka, contributing to over Rs.25 million in revenue for the local companies.
With the burden on the Earth’s food supply at an all-time high, local team members at Maya Tangalle have responded by infusing sustainable practices into menu engineering, reviewing local procurement and rethinking culinary operations to reduce food waste.

Waste Management

Maya Tangalle is committed to eliminating waste streams which include single-use items such as water bottles, straws, laundry bags, bathroom amenities and packaging for guestroom amenities. Through various programs launched and in partnership with local suppliers, the Manor are collectively reduced the amount of waste going to the landfills by 50 percent. Other initiatives included:
· Approximately 0.6 tons of cooking oil is collected and converted to biofuel per month.
· Property wide linen recycling program resulted in an increased in our average monthly linen recycling amount to 0.2 tons.
· We have recycling bins located across the property.

Fresh Farm

From the farm-to-table experience

Maya Tangalle launched the inspirational Southern Farm during the midst of the health pandemic to provide a wide range of organic herbs and vegetables for its guests. The farm generated up to 100 kilograms (kg) of produce per month for team member meals and guest dining experiences, and composts 400 kg of food waste per month which benefits the environment by recycling organic resources while conserving landfill space. In addition, the Manor also imparts eco-friendly farming techniques and offers meaningful guest engagement activities for young and seasoned travelers.

Energy

Energy Reducing Initiatives

95% of Maya Tangalle’s property lighting, use energy efficient lighting. Dimmable LEDs are also installed in all our common spaces and our 5 rooms, which allow our guests to adjust the intensity of lights based on requirements. This initiative has resulted in an annual energy saving of 5,500 kWh. To encourage our guests to do their part to protect the environment, all air conditioners throughout the Manor is equipped with an advanced eco-mode system.
