Tangalle is one of the largest towns in the southern province and is home to the Hambantota district. With sandy beaches in its coastline it is known as the golden rock in Sri Lankan etymology. Regionally the exquisite fishing hotspots are found here due to the largest bay protecting it with the reef. Here at Maya Tangalle we are located just two hours away from the Colombo Airport, one hour from the Mattala Airport, five minutes away from the Beliatta interchange highway and just fifteen minutes away from sandy coastal lines. With lush green paddy fields the weather here at our location is relatively mild in comparison to the rest of the town. Let the wind blow you away into your oasis of comfort and quietude.

Surf at The Hiri (or Hiriketiya) Beach

Slowly becoming one of Sri Lanka's premier surf destinations, Hiriketiya beach is the perfect place to learn to ride the waves or to take your surfing skills to the next level. Located on a horseshoe-shaped bay with waves rolling in almost all year (10 months in fact), Hiriketiya beach provides a challenge for all grades of surfer. Located 15 minutes away from the Manor, Hiriketiya Beach draws similar vibes to other trendy surf towns worldwide, whether it is Siargao in the Philippines, Tofino in Canada or Margaret River in Australia. The fun atmosphere and dreamy setting make it an incredible place to spend a few days. There are loads of awesome things to do, cheap places to eat and endless waves to surf.

Climb the Mulkirigala Rock Temple

Roughly 17 Km north of Tangalle is the famous rock temple that has been in existence for over 2000 years. At 200 meters high, it takes 533 steps to reach the top of the temple. Luckily, it doesn’t have to be done in one go as there are 5 terraces laid out at different levels. At each level, you can enter the caves housing huge reclining buddhas with beautiful wall-to-ceiling paintings. Once at the very top, you will be greeted by a troop of cheeky monkeys playing about terrace gates and posing for pictures! Here is where you will get the best views of the surrounding jungle and the hills of Sinharaja forest in the distance.

Catch the humming at Hummanaya Blow Hole

The humble village of Kudawella is home to nature’s unique phenomenon – a coastal blowhole shooting up streams of water to heights of 20-30 meters with an accompanying sound of an air blow.

Enjoy the natural pool at Tangalle Beach

Tangalle beach starts at a fishing port and carries on for miles to the northeast, the Medilla section is protected by natural rocks from the oncoming waves giving the area a pool-like feel. The Mangrove Beach Resort has a very cool bar facing the swimming area, with beach beds and a great drinks menu. Grab a beach bed, order a drink and enjoy the chilled atmosphere with very few people around.

Kattaragama Dewala

The Kataragama Temple complex is dedicated to Buddhist guardian deity Kataragama deviyo and Hindu War God Murugan. It is one of the few religious sites in Sri Lanka that is venerated by the Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and the indigenous people of Sri Lanka,

Tissamaharama Viharaya

Tissamaharama temple is one of the four major Buddhist monasteries known to the island and is the place consecrated by Buddha and 500 people who reached enlightenment on his 3rd visit to the country.

Rekawa Turtle Sanctuary

The southern golden beaches of Rekawa are known to attract several endangered species of sea turtles; which include loggerhead, hawksbill, olive ridley, green and leatherback turtles. These five species make their way to the stretch of untouched beach in Rekawa to lay their eggs before heading back to the ocean.
